SMPTE 2110

SMPTE 2110, (as ST 2110, is commonly referred,) is a suite of standards released by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers for transporting uncompressed or lossless compressed digital media over IP networks for broadcast contribution and production. 

SMPTE 2110 standards serve as a guideline for vendors and professionals implementing such network architecture, allowing them to develop new products that can be interconnected with other SMPTE 2110 compliant products over an IP network. In particular, SMPTE 2110 was designed to be a step toward the standardization of IP networking technology for transporting video for professional media, essentially replacing the need for SDI cables. 

There are a number of aspects to the SMPTE 2110 standard, including guidelines to handle uncompressed video and audio streams, timing, and metadata. One of the unique aspects of SMPTE 2110, compared to SDI or SMPTE 2022-6, is that it separates media information as individual “essence” streams in support of distributed workflows, allowing for more flexibility.
